Kate Felsen

Vice President, Communications

Kate Felsen leads the communications team at Turnaround for Children. She is responsible for raising awareness about the impact of adversity on learning, building credibility for the organization, and prompting educators, policy makers, funders, thought leaders and communities to do something to address an often-overlooked challenge in public education.

Kate joined Turnaround in 2012 after a distinguished career at ABC News. As Foreign Editor for the flagship evening news broadcast, she worked closely with Peter Jennings, Bob Woodruff, Charles Gibson and Diane Sawyer, covering breaking and feature stories around the globe, winning 11 Emmy, 3 DuPont and 2 Peabody Awards along the way. She joined Turnaround to leverage a wide range of communications tools to support the organization’s vision that one day, all children in the United States will attend schools that prepare them for the lives they choose.

Kate earned an M.A. in American foreign policy and international economics from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and an B.A., magna cum laude in history and literature from Harvard. She garnered first team All-America and Ivy League “Player of the Year” honors in lacrosse and coaches a club lacrosse team for middle school girls in New York City.

What book has influenced you most?

Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey –the first book I learned to read. It gave me a great sense of accomplishment and a thirst to read more and more and more!

What motivates you?

Learning from other people with vastly different experiences and knowledge from mine and sharing stories that help people make better informed decisions for their families, communities and the world.
