Turnaround for Children Cited as Strategy to Reduce Suspensions
Leslie Brody’s article “Taking Aim at School Suspensions” discusses the link between school suspensions and student dropouts as found in a report by the Justice Center at the Council of State Governments, The School Discipline Consensus Report: Strategies from the Field to Keep Students Engaged in School and Out of the Justice System. The report suggests that rather than harsh discipline, the creation of a “positive school climate” helps students feel safe and engaged.
Both Brody’s article and The Justice Center’s report highlight Turnaround for Children’s approach as a strategy to reduce suspensions.
“In New York City and Newark, N.J., a nonprofit called Turnaround for Children set up partnerships between schools and mental-health clinics to make it easier to get quick treatment for students who need intensive behavioral help.”
We encourage you to read Brody’s piece in The Wall Street Journal here.
