Gisele C. Shorter presents in America’s Promise Alliance GradNation Webinar

On December 12, 2017, Gisele C. Shorter, M.P.A., Ed.D., Turnaround for Children’s Vice President for Policy and Partnership Engagement, presented as part of an America’s Promise Alliance-hosted webinar titled “Achieving a 90 percent Graduation Rate: Meeting the Needs of Adolescents Who Face Poverty and Adversity,” part of the GradNation initiative, which aspires to increase the nation’s on-time high school graduation rate to 90 percent.

Dr. Shorter’s fellow presenters included Mary E. Walsh, P.h.D., Executive Director, and Patrice DiNatale, Director of New Practice, both of City Connects, a student support system that connects students to a tailored set of prevention, intervention and enrichment services aimed at helping them thrive in school, which is based at Boston College’s Lynch School of Education.

According to Dr. Shorter’s remarks, “The skills that children most need for successful learning are particularly vulnerable to the effects of adversity and are a powerful reason for the persistence of the achievement gap. The integration of science into concrete tools, strategies and practices provides resources and a pathway to ensure that young people growing up in poverty and those experiencing adversity don’t have to beat the odds.”
